General Information
Just as brick & mortar locations must be accessible to all employees and student, so should your website be accessible.

Public schools are subject to Sections 504 and 508 (electronic information) of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.  The ADA of 1990 required State and Local Gov't agencies give equal telecommunication opportunity to those with disabilities, meaning, schools are legally obligated to make their website content accessible to all.

The Department of Justice will adopt the WCAG 2.0 -Web Content Accessibility Guidelines established by the World Wide Web Consortium.

What to do?

First step. BE PROACTIVE. Moving forward, be sure all content is compliant

Consider an audit of your existing website (eSchoolview self audits design and code framework)

Have your district construct a compliance plan.  Set a goal for A, AA, or AAA compliance (40%, 50%, 60%) and allot a reasonable amount of time to complete.

Publish a Web Policy to your site ( Afton, Commack)

Use tools to check the compliance of pages

Practical Content Management:

·         Add alternative text and/or long descriptions to all images

·         Don't use color to convey meaning

·         Use color and contrast checkers

·         Pages titles should be clear

·         Structure of pages should make sense

·         Add closed captions to video. Provide transcripts to audio/video

·         Be certain documents have been checked for accessibility

·         Properly format tables using clear row and column headers

·         Be certain forms fields are clearly labeled.

·         Use descriptive hyperlinks (not too long/short and avoid "click here")

·         Avoid flashing/blinking/animated gifs

·         Avoid flyout menus and pop up windows

·         Monitor content being added (difficult with CMS)

·         Get feedback from users
